Murderous death toll: England capital since 2001

It's been 10 years since the killing of schoolboy Damilola Taylor (stabbed in the leg with a jagged bottle). A national newspaper published knife and gun crime statistics revealing a 138-strong list of the victims of violence in London since then... 138 in a single decade in just one city (30 shootings, 92 stabbings)...

Across England, c.835 young people aged under 14 have been admitted to hospital with knife wounds over the past 10 years.

Knife crime remains a tragic and terrible scourge affecting the UK... it remains unresolved.

Perhaps there are signs of a little hope: murders and attempted murders with a knife, in all ages, have dropped slightly compared to last year - 530 in 2008-09; 467 in 2009-10.

(Published in the Independent on Sunday - report was by Andrew Johnson, Nina Lakhani, Susannah Butter)

  1. Even if the statistics were correct (which we know are always greater than is ever published for the public) 138 victims just in the london region alone in a 10yr period still equates to 1-plus life lost EVERY MONTH to violent crime, yet government after government make the legislations lesser and lesser of it becoming a serious criminal offence of committing such an act.

  2. 92 stabbings and 30 of those in one year. and that was just teenage stabbings!

  3. Someone who is willing to commit murder is not going to be deterred by a law saying he can't carry a knife. Calls for Jailing anyone caught carrying a blade will just result in inflating prison space with non-violent people who happened to have been carrying a keychain knife or a multi-tool should a mandatory sentence law be implemented.

People should be campaigning for greater protection in law should they defend themselves during an attack. Currently, should someone carry a pepper spray keyring (available in France etc) they will be going down for possession of a sec.5 firearm, more serious than unprovoked threatening of someone with a knife.

Currently violent criminals in this country know that they are guaranteed to have an unarmed victim fall into their hands should they choose to carry out a crime. Easy picking. Free people should have the ability and clear protection in law to be able to defend their gift of life using whatever they feel is necessary. For the majority of recorded civilisation, law an order was the job of civilians, not agents of the state. Heavier state intervention 'pre-crime enforcement' in these matters leads to one thing - A police state.

  4. Someone needs to get in touch with the young people out there committing these crimes and let them know that this isn't their only option before things even get to the punishment stage because by then it's already too late.
